Xabi Alonso

Where is Xabi Alonso now?

Regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation, Liverpool FC legend Xabi Alonso called time on his distinguished career in 2017 after spending three seasons at Bayern Munich.

Starting his professional career with in 1999 with Real Sociedad he went onto 701 first-team appearances for five teams including Bayern Munich where he won three Bundesliga titles, Real Madrid where he won the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League and Liverpool where he won the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

At international level, he won 114 caps and was part of the Spanish golden generation of players which won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the UEFA European Championships both in 2008 and 2012.

Upon retiring from playing, Alonso took his first steps into coaching when he was appointed as manager of Tango Squad FC in 2016. This was a team set up by Adidas that pulled together the best non-signed street footballers from across Europe to represent the sports brand both on and off the pitch.

In 2018 he returned to former side Real Madrid to coach within their academy whilst completing his UEFA coaching badges. During his time there he led their under-14’s side to a league title.

Alonso was appointed manager of Real Sociedad’s ‘B’ team in 2019 and successfully guided them to the Spanish Segunda Division in his second season at the club – a league that they hadn’t played in for 60 years.

Unfortunately they had a tough time in the league and were relegated at the end of the 2021-22 season with Alonso leaving his role after their final match.

In October 2022 he made a return to football when he was appointed in his current role as manager of German side Bayer Leverkeusen.
