Where is Mikael Forssell now?

One of the few Finnish players to have plyed their trade in the Premier League, Mikael Forsssell retired from playing in 2018 after a season with IFK Helsingfors.

Starting his professional career in Finland at HJK he went onto make 435 first team appearances for nine different sides including four in England and three in Germany.

Arguably his best season during his time in England was in 2003-04 when he was playing for Birmingham City (on loan from Chelsea) where he scored 17 goals in 32 league appearances making him the division’s fifth highest goalscorer that year.

On the international scene Forssell was a regular for the Finland national side for 15 years winning 87 caps and scoring 29 goals making him the country’s second highest goalscorer.

Upon retiring from playing he has embarked on a career in coaching and spent time as assistant coach for HJK’s under-19’s side whilst working towards completing his UEFA coaching badges. He is currently coaching HJK’s under-17’s side.

He has also completed a degree in sports management and a master’s degree in sport and fitness management.

Away from football he hosts a successful podcast with his wife which has topped the Finnish podcast charts.
