Mark Delaney

Where is Mark Delaney now?

Former Aston Villa and Welsh international defender Mark Delaney retired from playing in 2007 at the age of 31 due to a succession of knee injuries which hampered him throughout his career.

Starting his playing career in 1996 for League of Wales side Carmarthen Town, he went onto make 291 professional appearances despite his injury problems which he attributes to his willingness to fly into tackles as a youngster.

He spent his entire Premier League career at Villa between 1998 and 2007 and was a member of the side which won the now defunct UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001 as well as winning 36 caps for the Wales national side during his time there.

Upon retiring from playing Delaney took his coaching badges and returned to Villa to coach within their academy where he has risen through the age groups to his current position as head coach of their under-23’s side.

In January 2021 in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, he had to take charge of first-team affairs for the third round FA Cup tie against Liverpool due to an outbreak at the club’s training ground which led to the manager Dean Smith and the entire first-team having to self-isolate.

Delaney’s team to face the Premier League champions was made up entirely of academy boys and under-23’s and did the manager and club proud, only losing 4-1 to a full-strength Liverpool side.
