Where is Mario Melchiot now?

A huge fan’s favourite at both Chelsea and Wigan Athletic,  the imposing Mario Melchiot finally retired from playing in 2010 after a spell in Qatar playing for Umm Salal.

Coming up through the ranks of the Ajax academy, Melchiot made his professional debut for the Dutch giants in 1996 and went onto make 464 first-team appearances for six teams winning the Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup twice as the FA Cup during his time playing for Chelsea.

He also represented the Netherlands national side on 22 occasions and was part of the 2004 UEFA European Championship squad.

Upon retiring from playing Melchiot moved to the United States and currently resides in Los Angeles where he has worked as a matchday pundit on Fox Sports.

He has also provided analysis and punditry on various sports channels including Sky Sports in the UK.

Melchiot also made his directing debut in 2018 with a series of documentaries about young football prospects hoping to make it to their first World Cup finals. The show called Phenoms was narrated by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

He is also a philanthropist and has developed two football fields in Amsterdam which are open all year around for children to use and which host the Mario Melchiot Tournament every year.
