Gary Rowett

Where is Gary Rowett now?

Former Premier League defender Gary Rowett’s Premier League career was predominantly spent at Derby County with spells at Leicester City and Charlton Athletic.

Unfortunately his playing career came to an early end in 2007 after a persistent knee injury whilst on the books at Burton Albion.

Upon retiring from playing Rowett had a couple of years out of the game before returning to Burton Albion as assistant manager to Paul Peschosolido in 2009.

When Peschosolido was sacked from the club in early 2012 Rowett was put in temporary charge and given the manager’s job on a full time basis a couple of months later.

Rowett enjoyed huge success as manager, reaching the League Two play-offs in his first season, sixth in his second season and he also oversaw Burton’s best ever League Cup performance when they reached the third round.

With Burton performing well at the start of the 2014-15 season, and his managerial stock ever-increasing, the ambitious Rowett left Albion to join Championship side Birmingham City, replacing outgoing manager Lee Clark.

After two reasonably successful years with Birmingham City where he took an inexpensively assembled squad to two top half finishes in the Championship, Rowett was surprisingly sacked in December 2016 after a boardroom reshuffle.

His Birmingham side were seventh in the league and three points off third place in the league when he was sacked.

Fortunately he wasn’t out of football management for long and just three months after he left Birmingham he joined his former side Derby County replacing Steve McClaren who had been sacked for a second time.

Joining with the club 10 points off of a Championship play off place, Rowett’s side took 15 points from the last 9 games and finished the 2016/17 season in ninth place.

An up and down season followed in 2017/18 where his team were as low as 15th after the opening 10 games but as high as second at Christmas climaxed in a sixth place finish and a play-off place.

Unfortunately the Rams lost to eventual play-off final winners Fulham in the semi-final which was the third unsuccessful play-off attempt in five years for the club.

Following this defeat Rowett asked to speak to newly relegated Stoke City about their vacant manager’s position and he joined the Potters in May 2018 with Stoke paying Derby around £2 million in compensation.

One of the pre-season favourites to win promotion, Stoke had a torrid time on the pitch only winning 8 of their 26 league fixtures which ultimately led to the dismissal of Rowett in January 2019.

He made a return to football management in October 2019 in his current role as manager at Championship side Millwall.
