Dominic Matteo

Where is Dominic Matteo now?

Having spent a large part of his career at Liverpool and Leeds United, Dominic Matteo retired from playing after two seasons at Stoke City in 2009.

Although he never won any silverware during his career, he was one of Leeds United’s best players during their 2000-01 Champions League campaign where they reached the semi-finals.

He ended his domestic career having made over 350 appearances for four clubs as well as representing the Scotland national side on six occasions in the early 2000’s.

Since retiring from playing, he has worked extensively in the media as a commentator on LFC TV and as a pundit on Sky Sports News.

He also published a book in 2011 called In My Defence the Autobiography in which he admitted running up over £1 million in gambling debts during his playing days.

Following the success of the book he joined the after-dinner speaking circuit, talking about his football career and the highs and lows of being a professional footballer.

Unfortunately in August 2015, Matteo was declared bankrupt because of his gambling debts which included betting £200,000 on a single horse.

He still occasionally works in the corporate hospitality suites at Leeds United.

In November 2019 Matteo was taken seriously ill and underwent an operation on a brain tumour but has since made a full recovery and was given the all-clear in April 2020.
