Arsenal recently managed to secure a fantastic away win against Greek side Olympiakos, which has helped them secure victory in the group stages of the Champions League.
Even though Arsene Wenger’s side has done the hard bit and reached the last 16 they will now in fact have to knock out the Champions League holders, Barcelona, in order to progress further in the competition.
But in celebration of this incredible win we take a look back at two of the greatest Champions League comebacks.
MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 BAYERN MUNICH
The 1999 Champions League final may not have been one of the most exciting games that has ever been witnessed in the competition however those final few minutes were absolutely thrilling.
Bayern Munich secured an early lead over the reds at the Nou Camp in Barcelona and they led the game for 85 long minutes. But Alex Ferguson’s side, renowned for late comebacks, managed to quite literally turn the match on its head in the dying moments of the game.
Super sub Ole Gunnar Solskjær was bought on with just 10 minutes remaining and in spite of a few chances United still couldn’t find an equaliser.
With 3 minutes of injury time added it was substitue Teddy Sheringham who found the back of the net to finally level things off.
And in the 92nd minute Solskjær scored from a corner and this incredibly swift and unexpected comeback helped hand the reds the trophy.
BARCELONA 5-1 CHELSEA (agg 6-4)
In the quarter finals of the 1999/2000 Champions League competition Chelsea faced Barcelona and they had incredibly taken the first leg 3-1 at home to the Spanish visitors.
But when the blues headed to the Nou Camp confident of being able to hold things together to help reach the semi’s it seemed Barca had different ideas.
After 24 minutes the home side scored a free-kick putting them 1-0 up and the comeback had begun.
Just before half-time Figo made it 2-0 and the pressure was on. Chelsea managed to claw a goal back in the second-half but sadly for Gianluca Vialli’s men Barcelona still had a trio of goals up their sleeves to leave the visitors in awe at their aggregated loss.
This year Barca once more are being touted to lift the trophy according to thatsagoal.com.
