Will Sergio Aguero win the Premier League Golden Boot this Season?

Man City superstar Sergio Aguero has been named as the narrow favourite to seize the Premiership Golden Boot this season. The Argentine striker is widely considered to be the finest striker in the country and he regularly destroys opposing defences with his pace, movement and finishing ability.

But his career at The Etihad has regularly been hampered by a litany of injuries and he only has one Golden Boot to his name.

That came in 2014-15 and since then the award has been claimed twice by Harry Kane and then by Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah last season.

If Aguero is to finally earn further individual glory, he will need to remain fit and hold off the charge of both of those dangerous strikers.

Right now he is the joint top scorer in the division along with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on eight goals apiece. But Kane and Salah are lurking ominously behind with seven goals each, while four other forwards are also on seven: Eden Hazard, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Glenn Murray and Aguero’s Man City teammate, Raheem Sterling.

It is looking extremely congested, but bookmakers reckon it could come down to a three-horsed race, just like BetOnline where Aguero is marginally ahead of Kane, with Salah not far behind.

Then there is a little bit of room before Aubameyang pops up at 7/1, with Hazard at 10/1, before placing any wager read their review to make sure that BetOnline is the bookmaker for you.

The Belgian started the season in blistering form, but he has since gone off the boil somewhat. Aubameyang is a deadly finisher and he plays for an Arsenal team that create a lot of chances, but he is often shunted out to the wing or left on the bench to accommodate Alexandre Lacazette, so that could dent his chances.

It could therefore come down to a battle between Aguero, Kane and Salah. Aguero would surely have more Golden Boots glistening in his trophy cabinet were it not for his injury woes, and that could yet derail his charge this season.

But if he remains largely fit for the rest of the season, the award is his for the taking. Premiership pace setters Man City have banged in an incredible 40 goals in their opening 13 games, and they are simply blowing the opposition away at present. Salah’s Liverpool have only managed 26 in that time, while Kane’s Spurs side have 23. Chelsea and Arsenal are on 28, but no team looks like outscoring Man City and Aguero is their main man in attack.

The Citizens are blessed with plenty of dangerous forwards, including Sterling, Leroy Sane, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez, but none can play that central role like Aguero.

His only real competition is Gabriel Jesus, and the young Brazilian cannot hold a torch to Aguero right now. He has the experience to time his runs to perfection, but he retains the physical attributes that have made him such a menace in this league over the years.

The likes of Sane, Silva, Silva and Sterling are in sensational form, and Kevin De Bruyne is still to return from injury, so Aguero should benefit from fantastic service. But Kane will fight tooth and nail to make the award his own.

Everything at Spurs goes through him and he too should benefit from Christian Eriksen’s return from injury. The England captain is Mr Consistency, and he will surely be on a healthy goals tally by the end of the campaign.

Then there is Salah, who posted the sort of goalscoring figures normally reserved for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo last season. He struggled to replicate that form at the start of the current campaign, but his Midas touch has returned and he will represent a dangerous opponent for Aguero too.

It looks set to develop into a thrilling battle over the course of the season, but if he remains fit it is Aguero’s award to lose.
