The end of the season is fast-approaching and while there are still a number of clubs who have something to fight for, for many they are now at a stage where this season’s fortunes are already sealed and their attention will soon turn towards planning for next term.
Particularly for those clubs that are now resigned to mid-table mediocrity, but also for those still in the hunt for silverware or trying to stave off relegation, potential summer signings will now be being considered and by making a move early in the transfer window, there are bargains to be had.
Better still, there remain a number of high-profile players who are out of contract at the end of this season and by virtue of being free agents will effectively be able on a free transfer in the summer.
Here’s our list of the top five players who have yet to sign new contracts at their current clubs and will hence become free agents in May:
Chelsea veteran Gary Cahill is no longer a first-choice centre-back at Stamford Bridge and has been resigned to a place on the bench under Maurizio Sarri, meaning the 32-year-old is keen for a move away having recently retired from international duty in an attempt to prolong his club career.
Cahill is out of contract in the summer and his experience and pedigree would make him a valuable asset to most clubs, with Galatasaray among those currently interested in securing his signature.
Olivier Giroud is another Chelsea man that has struggled to get game time at Stamford
Bridge under Sarri and his contract also running out means he can leave for free in the summer.
The 32-year-old French striker has never been the quickest however so he is unlikely to lose much pace compared to how that typically afflicts players when they enter their thirties and could still be an effective target man for many a side.
David de Gea
It’s incredible that David de Gea’s contract saga at Manchester United has dragged on for this long given his importance to the club and somewhat worrying for United fans therefore, as the Spanish stopper must at least be heavily considering a move away to not yet put pen to paper on a new deal.
Despite the relative struggles the Red Devils have endured this term, De Gea has remained one of the Premier League’s top performers and it would be catastrophic for United if her were to leave Old Trafford on a free.
Football betting apps are currently offering 4/1 that De Gea will be a Real Madrid player next season, but they won’t be his only potential suitors.
Atletico Madrid full-back Filipe Luis is also in the final year of his contract and looks set for a move, with the 33-year-old Brazilian reportedly a target for Barcelona, PSG and Brazilian club Flamengo.
Luis has been a key player in Atletico punching above their weight in the Champions League and La Liga in recent years and so as a free agent would be an unbelievable steal.
It’s easy to forget that Daniel Sturridge is still just 29 years of age, but the Liverpool and England striker has become something of a forgotten man at Anfield and resigned to being a bit part player in Liverpool’s title challenge after his struggles with injury in recent years.
With his contract also up in the summer however, the undoubted talent he possesses means he has to be worth a punt for many clubs in need of a natural finisher. If he can return to form, he may still have a few years left of his prime to become one of the most valuable free signings ever.
