Des Walker

Where is Des Walker now?

A fan’s favourite at every team he played for, legendary defender Des Walker retired after a second spell at Nottingham Forest in 2004.

Spending 20 seasons playing professional football, Walker experienced many career highlights including two League Cup wins with Nottingham Forest in 1989 and 1990 and a spell playing in Italy with Sampdoria.

He also made the PFA team of the year on four consecutive seasons from 1989 to 1992.

Although he wasn’t the most technical of players, his speed and brilliant defensive mind led to fans frequently chanting ‘You’ll Never Beat Des Walker’.

Walker also represented his country on seven occasions on the international stage at under 21 level and 59 times for the senior side including the World Cup in 1990 and the European Championships in 1992.

Although many people in the game thought he would go into coaching once he retired, Walker surprised everyone by keeping a low profile and even working as a lorry driver for a friend’s haulage firm in order to keep busy.

He did however pull on his boots once more In 2012 and 2014 when he turned out for the England team for the Soccer Aid charity games played at Old Trafford.

In 2013 Walker appeared in a music video along with Stuart Pearce, Teddy Sheringham and Les Ferdinand for Nottingham based band “The Establishment” – managed by Dion Dublin.

After a long absence away from football, Walker eventually took his UEFA coaching badges and joined Championship side Derby County in 2016 in his current role as an academy coach.

Walker was a member of the successful PlayOn soccer sevens side that won the Masters plate at the 2017 Hong Kong Masters.

He is also a popular after dinner speaker at various events across the UK and is available to book through Champions UK.

The football gene is clearly strong in his family as he has two sons currently playing professionally, Tyler who plays for Nottingham Forest and Lewis who is on the books at Queens Park Rangers.
