Where is Steven Gerrard now?
An Anfield legend, Steven Gerrard or ‘Stevie G’ as the Liverpool fans affectionately know him, retired from playing professional football in 2016 after a year spent playing in the MLS with LA Galaxy alongside fellow ex-Premier League stars Robbie Keane and Ashley Cole.
Starting his Liverpool career in 1998 he went onto make 748 first-team appearances, scoring 191 goals over an 18-year period and won the FA Cup twice, the League Cup three times, the UEFA Cup, the Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League during his time on Merseyside.
On the international front he represented the England senior side on 114 occasions between 2000 and 2014 and was part of the squads that played in the 2000, 2004 and 2012 European Championships and the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Finals.
Having already dipped his toe in the media world with BT Sport in 2015 for their Champions League coverage, upon retiring from playing he stepped up his pundit work across the networks, following in the footsteps of other former Liverpool team mates Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen, Jamie Redknapp and Steve McManaman.
Alongside his media commitments, Gerrard worked within the famous Liverpool academy as a youth coach whilst working towards completing his UEFA A coaching license.
Prior to joining the youth setup at Liverpool, he had already passed most of his UEFA coaching badges which included time spent in the United States coaching the LA Galaxy under 18s side.
In November 2016, Gerrard started provisional talks with League One side MK Dons regarding the vacant manager’s job but he turned it down as he felt the opportunity had come too soon for him. He was also linked with a move to Australia and a reunion with former manager Brendan Rodgers at Scottish side Celtic.
For the 2017/18 season Gerrard took charge of the Liverpool under-18’s side having already impressed manager Jurgen Klopp and academy director Alex Inglethorpe with his application and his work ethic.
Alongside his coaching duties and media work, he also worked for the club in an ambassadorial role where he promoted the Liverpool FC brand across the world.
In 2017 Gerrard was awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool which is the city’s highest civic honour as well as being inducted in the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame.
That year he was also named in UEFA’s Team of the Century which is “an all-time XI” made up from players who have featured most in their Team of the Year. He was one of only two players within the team that had never played for Real Madrid or Barcelona – the other was Bayern Munich legend Phillip Lahm.
In May 2018, Gerrard was appointed manager of Scottish giants Rangers and had a successful first season finishing runners-up to Celtic. In only his third season in charge he guided the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title with six games of the season remaining which was their first title for 10 years.
After a great start to the 2021-22 campaign, Gerrard left Rangers to return to the Premier League as head coach of Aston Villa but his tenure only lasted 11 months before getting sacked in October 2022 after winning just two of the first 12 games of the new season.
He returned to football management in July 2023 when he joined current side Al-Ettifaq who play in the Saudi Pro League.
