Where is Steve Stone now?
After winding down his career at Leeds United, Steve Stone retired from playing in 2006 after a succession of injuries which unfortunately plagued him throughout his career.
Starting his professional career at Nottingham Forest in 1989, he made 446 first-team appearances over a 17-year career four sides including Aston Villa where he won the Intertoto Cup in 2001 and Portsmouth where he was part of the side which won promotion to the Premier League in 2003.
On the international stage he represented the England national side on nine occasions and was a member of the 1996 UEFA European Championships squad where he made three appearances from the bench.
Upon retiring from playing Stone moved into the coaching side of the game and joined Newcastle United as an academy coach before a promotion to assistant reserve team manager under Peter Beardsley in July 2010.
When Alan Pardew joined the club as their new manager in December 2010, he immediately set about shaping his backroom staff and promoted Stone to first-team coach.
When Pardew left Newcastle United in December 2014, Stone took charge of the club with John Carver for the remaining 20 games of the 2014-15 season. Unfortunately the Magpies only managed three wins from these 20 games but managed to keep the team from relegation however it didn’t stop the pair getting the sack in June 2015.
After spending some time away from the game (apart from a bit of co-commentary for the BBC) Stone made a return to coaching in November 2018 when he was appointed as manager of Burnley’s under-23’s side.
In July 2021 he was promoted to first-team coach but left the club in April 2022 along with manager Sean Dyche and Ian Woan. He made a return to football in January 2023 when he joined new Everton manager Sean Dyche’s backroom staff.
