Where is Steve Nicol now?
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol finally retired from playing in 2001 after three seasons playing in the United States with the Boston Bulldogs.
Starting his professional career at Ayr United in 1979, he went onto make over 600 first-team appearances over a 22-year period for seven clubs including a very successful 13 seasons at Anfield where he won four First Division titles, three FA Cups and the European Cup.
On the international front he represented the Scotland national side on 27 occasions and was part of the squad which went to the 1986 FIFA World Cup Finals.
During his time in the US with the Bulldogs, Nicol worked in a player-coach role before joining MLS side New England Revolution in 2002 as interim coach before getting the job on a permanent basis after 21 games.
He enjoyed tremendous success with his Revolution side and guided them to six successive MLS Eastern Conference finals from 2002 through 2007, winning four of them to advance to the MLS Cup four times in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Nicol also led the team to its first ever cup championship, the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as well as the SuperLiga 2008 crown but he left the club by mutual consent in 2012 after 10 successful years.
He is now a regular face on ESPN’s football coverage in the United States as well as a regular contributor with talkSPORT in the UK.
His autobiography 5 League Titles and a Packet of Crisps was published in 2016 which includes numerous anecdotes from his time spent within the succesful Liverpool side of the 1980’s.

#One2Eleven (4-4-2 Formation)
Steve Nicol was a guest on Sky Sports programme The Fantasy Football Club in September 2016 where he picked the eleven best players he had ever played with in their #One2Eleven section of the show.
GK – Bruce Grobbelaar – a great goalkeeper, people seem to unfairly remember him for the times he dropped the ball but for everyone he dropped he caught 1,000.
RB – Phil Neal – Mr Professional who never gave the ball away. For someone who wasn’t blessed with much pace it was very rare for someone to get round him.
LB – Steve Nicol –if I’m picking a dream team then I’m going to be in it.
CB – Alan Hansen – a fantastic player with the ball at his feet who was also the guy you went to on and off of the pitch.
CB – Mark Lawrensen – he formed a great partnership with Alan Hansen and was always the one who put in a last-ditch tackle. They really had a great partnership
RM – Ray Houghton – there weren’t many better passers of a ball going forward than Ray. He was what you’d term a ‘football player’.
CM – Graeme Souness – the best leader of men I have played under. If you were going into a fight you’d want him to be by your side. A fantastic footballer and a real captain.
CM – Jan Molby – no one had a better range of passing than Jan, so accurate. He also got his foot in and scored goals.
LM – John Barnes – an absolute joy to watch when he had the ball at his feet. A lovely guy on and off the field. I can’t say enough good things about him.
ST – Kenny Dalglish & Ian Rush – their telepathy was incredible. Fantastic people and great players. Ask any defenders who played against them and they’ll tell you who was the best.
