Where is Stelios now?
Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stelios Giannakopolous retired from playing in 2009 after returning to his native Greece and spending a season with AEL.
Playing professionally for 18 years, Stelios spent six of those in the Premier League making 180 appearances and scoring 28 goals. Prior to his spell in England he played for Olympiacos where he won the Greek Super League seven times in seven years.
On the international scene he was an important part of the Greece national team for 11 years winning 77 caps and was one of the key players of the team which won the 2004 UEFA European Championships.
Regarded as a legend in his homeland after the Euros win, Stelios was appointed president of the Greek Player’s Football Association in 2010 but left the role after two years.
He was appointed in his first managerial post in August 2012 when he joined Greek second division side Paniliakos as head coach, but his tenure was short-lived and he was sacked by the club in 2013 after a run of poor results.
After a two-year spell with Greek second division side AE Kifisia, he joined the Greece national setup as assistant manager in 2019 but was sacked along with manager Angelos Anastasiadis after failing to qualify for the 2020 UEFA European Championships.
