Where is Stefano Eranio now?
Former Derby County midfielder Stefano Eranio retired from playing in 2003 after a season playing in a player-assistant manager role at Italian Fourth Division side Pro Sesto.
Starting his professional career in 1984 at Genoa he went onto over 450 first-team appearances for four sides including AC Milan where he won three Serie A titles, three Supercoppa Italiana cups and the UEFA Champions League. He also spent four years in the Premier League with Derby County where he was such a fan’s favourite that he was voted as one of the club’s 11 greatest footballers.
On the international front he played for the Italy national side on 20 occasions between 1990 and 1997 scoring three goals.
Upon retiring from playing Eranio returned to former club AC Milan as a coach within their youth setup but now just works as a scout for the club.
He also worked as a co-commentator for Swiss television channel RSI and was involved in a racism row in 2015 when he commented on Roma’s black centre-back Rudiger saying that ‘Black players, when they’re in a defensive line, often make certain errors because they’re not concentrating. They are physically strong, but when it comes to thinking about… they often make mistakes.’
Eranio was immediately sacked by the station for his comment but he claimed that he was completely misunderstood.
In 2017 he launched his own football camp in Milan with hopes to open an English one in the near future.
