Where is Shaun Derry now?
Adored by the Queens Park Rangers fans for his gritty no-nonsense displays and never say die attitude, Shaun Derry retired from playing in 2013.
Starting his professional career in 1995 he went onto make 649 first-team appearances for eight clubs winning promotions to the Premier League with both Crystal Palace and QPR.
Upon retiring from playing, Derry went straight into coaching and was appointed player-manager of struggling League One side Notts County although he never made an appearance for the club despite being registered.
He had a dream start at County where he secured their League One status by winning six of their remaining nine games but he endured a poor second season and was sacked in March 2015 after a succession of poor results left the club on the brink of the relegation places.
In November 2015 Derry made a return to football management when he was appointed manager of League Two side Cambridge United and made an immediate impact on the club with three wins and a draw in his first full month in charge. This led to him being awarded the League Two manager of the month and his Cambridge side finished the season in a respectable ninth place.
After an underwhelming first full season where his team finished in eleventh place, Derry had to endure the start of the 2017/18 season without his top-scorer Luke Berry who was sold to League Two rivals Luton Town. Unfortunately after a run of just three wins over 16 games over the winter of 2017/18, he left Cambridge by mutual consent in February 2018.
He then joined Oxford United in 2018 as first team coach before returning to former side Crystal Palace a year later in as a professional development coach within their academy.
After a brief spell as under-23’s coach Derry was promoted to one of manager Patrick Vieira’s first-team coaching staff in August 2021 but was sacked in February 2023 after reportedly ‘overstepping his roles and responsibilities’ during a passionate dressing room rant.
Derry made a return to football coaching in August 2023 when he joined Gary O’Neil at Wolverhampton Wanderers in his current role as first team coach.

#One2Eleven (4-3-3 Formation)
Shaun Derry was a guest on Sky Sports programme The Fantasy Football Club in October 2015 where he picked the eleven best players he had ever played with in their #One2Eleven section of the show.
GK – Julian Speroni – a real top goalkeeper and unbelievable guy. Won Player of the Season three years on the bounce at Crystal Palace.
RB – Steve Finnan – a good friend of mine from our days at Notts County. The fact that he got into so many PFA Teams of the Year ahead of Gary Neville tells you how good he was.
LB – Wayne Quinn – had a dream of a left foot but his career ended up finishing far too early at just 28.
CB – Jose Fonte – the first name on the team sheet at Southampton. A great player who has really developed his game during his time in England.
CB – Clint Hill – just an unbelievable guy who young players should aspire to. A leader of men and a leader of people.
CM – Joey Barton – he sets such a high standard which sometimes gets him into trouble. He always wants to win everything, no matter what it is.
CM – Alejandro Faurlin – had three serious cruciate ligament injuries and could have gone onto play at the top level had it not been for these. The best midfielder I have ever played alongside.
CM – Robert Prosinecki – a true world-class superstar. We were 2-0 down at half time when we played together at Portsmouth and I went to have a go at him as he wasn’t tracking his runners.
He was having a fag with the kit man. told me to shush and not to speak to him like that and then went out for the second half, scored a hat trick and won the game for us.
RAM – Adel Taraabt – he single-handedly won some important games for us when we played together at QPR. He should have played at a much higher level and will probably look back on his career with regret.
ST – Peter Crouch – I think he is one of the Premier League’s all time top centre forwards. He adds a different dimension to the game and offers a Plan B.
LAM – Andy Johnson – one of the most potent forwards in the Premier League for about three years during his time at Crystal Palace.
