Where is Roy Keane now?
A legend of the Premier League, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane called time on his playing career in 2006 after a short spell in Scotland with Celtic.
Starting his professional career at Nottingham Forest in 1990, he went onto make 676 first-team appearances for three clubs including 13 seasons with United where he won a number of trophies including seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League. He also won the Scottish Premier League and the League Cup with Celtic.
Individually he was selected in the PFA Team of the Year on five occasions as well as the Team of the Century.
On the international stage he was a mainstay of the Republic of Ireland national side winning 67 caps and representing his country at the 2004 FIFA World Cup finals.
After hanging up his boots it was widely thought that Keane would go into coaching and in August 2006 he joined Championship side Sunderland as manager.
He enjoyed immediate success with the Mackems, winning the Championship title in his first season but his time in the Premier League proved to be a much tougher task fighting relegation in his first season and inconsistent form during his second season.
After two years at the club he resigned citing differences with their major shareholder Ellis Short and chairman Niall Quinn.
However, Keane wasn’t out of football management for long and joined Ipswich Town as their new manager in April 2009 with a remit to get the side back up to the Premier League. Unfortunately his side struggled on the pitch and never gained enough momentum to push for a promotion challenge and he was promptly sacked in 2011.
After two years away from coaching Keane joined the Republic of Ireland setup in 2013 as Martin O’Neill’s assistant manager and a year later he was appointed as Paul Lambert’s assistant at Aston Villa, combining both roles.
Unfortunately this dual role didn’t work for him and he left Aston Villa as he was unable to juggle his responsibilities for both club and country.
Focusing solely on the Republic of Ireland national team, Keane and O’Neill had a successful Euro 2016 qualifying campaign finishing third in a tough group and beating Bosnia in the play-offs. The team went onto have a decent Euro 2016 tournament beating Italy to qualify from their group but went out in the second round to hosts France.
After a disappointing campaign for Ireland in the inaugural UEFA Nations League which led to relegation from their group, both O’Neill and Keane left their posts by mutual consent in November 2018.
The pair then joined Championship side Nottingham Forest two months later, both having played for the club earlier on in their careers but Keane left after five months as he wanted to resurrect his managerial career.
Away from coaching Keane regularly appears as a pundit on ITV’s football coverage of Champions League football and has gained massive popularity for his “harsh but fair” analysis of games.
Since September 2019 he has also been working for Sky Sports as a pundit on their Premier League coverage where he has formed an unlikely allegiance with former Manchester City player Micah Richards.
In May 2021 Keane was inducted into the Premier League’s Hall of Fame.
