Where is Noel Whelan now?
Former Coventry and Leeds striker Noel Whelan called time on his career in 2010 after a brief spell playing for League Two side Darlington.
Coming through the youth ranks at Leeds United he made his professional debut in 1993 and went onto make over 300 first-team for twelve different clubs with arguably his most productive days during his five years at Coventry City where he formed great partnerships with Darren Huckerby and Dion Dublin.
His former Coventry manager Gordon Strachan has since revealed that he moved Whelan into his home during his time as a player at the club to stop him going to jail and was advised by the police to keep a close eye on him after a string of altercations.
Strachan went onto say that he had learnt a lot from his time managing Whelan, as most problems he had to deal with as a manager in later years he had already experienced with the player.
Having already gained some on-the-job experience during his time playing in Scotland with Dunfermline Athletic, upon retiring from playing he returned to one of his former clubs Derby County as a youth coach where he stayed for a year before leaving due to the strain of the commute from his home in Harrogate.
Whelan currently works in the media as a commentator on Leeds United games for BBC Leeds where he has gained a cult following for his enthusiasm and passion. He also has his own show on the station where he previews and analyses upcoming games featuring the West Yorkshire clubs.
