Where is Nigel Clough now?
Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Nigel Clough retired from a full-time playing career in 1998 at the age of 32 after a couple of seasons playing for Manchester City.
Starting his professional career at The City Ground in 1984 he went onto make over 650 first-team appearances over a 24-year period for six teams including Liverpool, Manchester City and Burton Albion where he spent 10 years at the end of his career.
He will arguably be best known for his time with Forest where he made over 350 appearances, winning the League Cup in 1989 and 1990 and a runner-s up medal in the 1991 FA Cup Final.
On the international stage he represented the England national side on 14 occasions between 1989 and 1993.
As player-manager of Burton Albion he enjoyed huge success taking them from Step 4 football to the brink of promotion to the Football League before leaving in 2009 to join Derby County.
After four years as manager of the Rams, Clough was sacked following a poor run of form and a defeat to arch-rivals Nottingham Forest in 2013. He was the club’s longest serving manager in over a decade.
He wasn’t out of the game for long and joined Sheffield United in October 2013 reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in his first season. His team’s fine form in cup competitions continued in the 2014-15 season when they reached the semi-finals of the League Cup but he was sacked at the end of the 2014-15 season after losing in the League One play-off semi-finals.
In December 2015 Clough he rejoined former side Burton Albion after a near seven year absence replacing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who had guided the club to the top of League One before leaving for QPR.
He maintained the club’s good form and guided them to promotion to the Championship in 2016 but were relegated back to League One in 2018.
In May 2020 Clough left Burton by mutual consent as part of an enforced cost-cutting exercise by the club brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic. However, he wasn’t out of management for long and joined his current side, League Two strugglers Mansfield Town, just six months later.
