Where is Nicky Butt now?
As one of the immensely talented group of players that came through the Manchester United academy known as “Fergie’s Fledglings”, Nicky Butt retired from playing in 2010 after a brief spell playing in Hong Kong with South China.
Over his 19 year career he made over 600 first team appearances and won a number of trophies including six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the UEFA Champions League as well as the Championships title during his time with Newcastle United.
He also won 39 caps for the England national side between 1997 and 2004 and represented his country in both the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2004 European Championships.
After hanging up his boots, Butt returned to Old Trafford in 2012 as an under-21’s coach stepping up briefly to assist interim first team manager Ryan Giggs after David Moyes was sacked in 2014.
In February 2016 after a club restructure, he was appointed as head of Manchester United’s academy and was promoted again in July 2019 to head of first-team development reporting to former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.
He left the post in March 2021 as he wanted a new challenge in football.
Away from football coaching he is a co-owner of Salford City along with David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and the Neville brothers. The group have also opened a university called UA92 which is backed by Lancaster University and Trafford council.
In October 2022, Butt was appointed in his current role as CEO of Salford City when Gary Neville stepped away to concentrate on his other business responsibilities.
