Where is Neil Lennon now?
Former Leicester City midfielder Neil Lennon retired from playing in 2008 after a short-spell playing for League Two side Wycombe Wanderers which were managed by ex Celtic team-mate Paul Lambert.
All of his Premier League experience came at Leicester City in the mid to late nineties where he was part of the successful team that won the League Cup in 1997 and 2000.
Leaving the Foxes for former manager Martin O’Neill’s Celtic shortly after the cup win, Lennon enjoyed more success winning the Scottish Premier League title five times in seven years. He also won the Scottish Cup four times and the League Cup twice during his spell at Parkhead.
Upon retiring from playing he went straight into a career in coaching and joined Celtic as a coach under manager Tony Mowbray. When Mowbray was sacked, Lennon took over first-team affairs on a caretaker basis before taking over as manager on a full-time basis in 2010.
After four successful years at Celtic winning three league titles and two Scottish Cups Lennon announced his departure from the club in May 2014 citing that he wanted a new challenge.
He wasn’t out of football for long and returned in October 2014 when he was appointed manager of struggling Championship side Bolton Wanderers. Unfortunately, after a nightmare 18 months at the club with bankrupty issues as well as poor form, Lennon left by mutual consent after the new consortium led by ex footballer Dean Holdsworth decided that they wanted to bring in their own manager.
Once again it wasn’t long before he was back in football, and he was appointed manager of Scottish Championship side Hibernian in June 2016 taking Garry Parker with him as part of his coaching team, having already worked with him at Celtic and Bolton.
An extremely successful first season for Lennon saw his team promoted to the Scottish Premier League as champions having missed out in the play-offs in the previous two seasons.
A successful return to the top-flight with a fourth placed finish and qualification for the Europa League preceeded a difficult second season on the pitch for his side. This culminated in a heated team discussion between Lennon and the players which saw the Irishman suspended from first-team duties and he left the club by mutual consent in January 2019.
However, he wasn’t out of management for long and rejoined Celtic a month later when Brendan Rodgers joined Leicester City. With the Bhoys already top of the league and still in the two domestic cup competitions, Lennon saw out the season in style ending up winning the treble.
In February 2021 he left Celtic after a difficult season which saw his team 18 points adrift of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side at the top of the table.
Lennon returned to management in March 2022 when he joined Omonia Nicosia as manager but despite salvaging the season by winning the Cypriot Cup and qualifying for the Europa League in his few months at the club, he was relieved of his duties just seven months into his tenure.
