Mikel Arteta

Where is Mikel Arteta now?

A creative attacking midfielder renowned for his pinpoint crossing and killer passes, Mikel Arteta retired from playing at the end of the 2015-16 season at the age of 34 after spending five seasons in the Premier League.

He enjoyed success both in England with Arsenal where he won the FA Cup twice and in Scotland with Rangers where he won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup in the same season.

Surprisingly he never managed to win a senior international cap for Spain despite playing in the Spanish under 16’s, 17’s, 18’s and under-21 age groups. This was due to the abundance of midfield talent within their squad at this time including the likes of Iniesta and Xavi.

Arteta had made it clear during his final season at Arsenal that he wished to pursue a coaching career after he had finished playing which led to offers from Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur as well as from Arsenal.

Although he was good friends with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino , it would have been too problematic to join the North London side because of his Arsenal connections.

He eventually decided to join fellow Spaniard Pep Guardiola at Manchester City as one of his coaches in July 2016 making him the second former Gunners captain (after Patrick Vieira) to reject a coaching role at Arsenal and make the move up north.

After three and a half successful years at The Etihad Stadium winning two Premier League titles, two FA Cup wins and two EFL Cup wins, Arteta left in 2019 to join Arsenal as their new manager replacing Unai Emery.

A successful first few months followed for the Spaniard and he won the FA Cup in August 2020 making him the first person to win the trophy as a captain and a manager of Arsenal.

He has since gone onto win two FA Community Shields and led his team to a second-placed finish in the 2022/23 season which was their best since the 2015/16 season.
