Michael Owen

Where is Michael Owen now?

Former Premier League and England international striker Michael Owen retired from playing in 2013 after a short spell playing for Stoke City.

Coming up through the academy at Liverpool, he started his professional career in 1996 and went onto make 482 first-team appearances over a 17-year period for five teams including a spell in the Spanish La Liga with Real Madrid.

One of only seven players to score 150 Premier League goals and also the youngest player to score 100 EPL goals, his career was unfortunately marred by injuries but still provided him with a Premier League title medal whilst at Manchester United along with a fantastic international record scoring 40 goals for England in 89 appearances.

He also won the Balon D’Or in 2001 after his goalscoring exploits helped Liverpool win the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup that year.

Since retiring from playing Owen has mostly been seen on our screens as a pundit, match analyst and occasional co-commentator for BT Sport’s football coverage.

He has also been involved in ambassadorial work for betting company BetVictor and Spey Whiskey and in 2016 was appointed as Liverpool FC’s first international ambassador which involved him engaging with fans around the world and representing the club at various fan and commercial events.

Unfortunately this appointment was not popular with the Liverpool fans who set up a petition to get him removed from his post because of a comment he made when he was co-commentator for the 2017 Europa League final between Manchester United and Ajax when he referred to United as ‘we’.

A horseracing enthusiast, Owen co-owns a thriving training yard called Manor House Stables and has even had a go as a jockey himself in 2017 in a charity race at Ascot where he finished in second place.

In 2020 he took part in the second series of ‘Harry Heroes which saw the England players travel to Germany to play in a grudge match which they won 1-0 and in 2022 he appeared on ITV’s ‘The Masked Singer‘ dressed as The Doughnut.

Since May 2023 he has been presenting Sky Sports show ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’ alongside former Premier League referee Howard Webb where they discuss contentious PL decisions using match footage and unreleased audio

His daughter Gemma was a contestant in the 2022 series of ITV’s hugely popular show Love Island.

Perfect 11

In September 2007, Owen was asked by football magazine Four Four Two to name the best players he played with and against for their ‘Perfect 11’ feature. His team is listed below

GK – Peter Schmeichel – he had it all and was the best keeper around. Not just a good shot-stopper but good all round.

RB – Cafu – along with Roberto Carlos they changed the way that full-backs played – not just defend the ball but be good on it as well.

LB – Roberto Carlos – great on the ball and used to make fantastic runs. A brilliant player.

CB – Marcel Desailly – virtually impossible to play against. He was strong, quick and good on the ball.

CB – Paolo Maldini – A great left foot who was a very intelligent player. To play at the highest level for some long is a huge achievement.

RM – Cristiano Ronaldo – a great player with great skill, speed, strength, creates goals and scores goals.

CM – Steven Gerrard – the ultimate modern-day player, one of the best passers, quick and one of the best at intercepting passes and reading the game.

CM – Roy Keane – a player who could run all day long. Kept it simple and like Gerrard was a great passer of the ball.

LM – John Barnes – I was amazed at how skilful he was. He rarely gave the ball away and used to carress it round the pitch. Never got the credit he deserved when he was playing for England.

Striker – Alan Shearer– probably the Premier League’s greatest player he scored goals at every level and for such a long time too. Very mentally tough.

Striker – Thierry Henry – one of the best ever imports to the Premier League, Henry took it to a new level. I would have paid to watch him
