Lee Clark

Where is Lee Clark now?

Former Premier League midfielder Lee Clark retired from playing in 2006 after a second spell with Newcastle United.

Starting his professional career with the Magpies in 1990, he went onto make 528 first team appearances over a a 16-year period for three teams winning the First Division title and promotion to the Premier League with all three of them (Sunderland, Fulham and Newcastle United).

Upon retiring from playing he went into the coaching side of the game and joined the backroom staff at St James’ Park as reserve team manager and then first-team coach before joining Glenn Roeder at Norwich City as his assistant in 2007.

After a year at the Canaries he was appointed in his first managerial role at Huddersfield Town where he spent four successful years, breaking numerous records before getting controversially sacked in February 2012 despite the team sitting in fourth place in the league.

It was only a matter of months before he was back in management and he joined Birmingham City after Chris Hughton left to take over at Norwich City but after a terrible run of form winning just one home league game in a year, Clark and assistant Steve Watson were sacked in October 2014.

He then joined struggling Championship side Blackpool in 2014 but was unable to turn around the team’s fortunes and they were relegated at the end of the season with Clark resigning shortly after.

Around this time he started writing his autobiography called Black or White, No Grey Areas, which has stories relating to his time as a player at Newcastle United, Sunderland and Fulham as well as his career in management.

In February 2016 he made a return to football when he was appointed manager of struggling Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock and managed to secure the club’s status in the top flight with a win in the play-off final before leaving after a year to join League One strugglers Bury.

Despite maintaining their League One status, his Bury side struggled on the pitch at the start of the 2017/18 season and he was sacked in October 2017 after managing just two wins in 15 games.

After 18 months out of the game Clark made a return to football management in June 2019 when he joined National League North side Blyth Spartans but left by mutual consent in February 2020 with his team second bottom of the National League North.

He then had a short spell as director of football at non-league side Newcastle Blue Star before spells at Al-Ittihad of the Oman Professional League and then Al Merrikh who play in the Sudan Premier League before returning to the UK.

His son Bobby Clark has followed his father into professional football, making his Premier League debut for Liverpool in 2022.
