John Fashanu

Where is John Fashanu now?

Often criticised for being over physical and aggressive in his style of play, John Fashanu retired from the game at the age of 33 after snapping knee ligaments whilst playing for Aston Villa in 1995.

A member of Wimbledon’s infamous Crazy Gang with players such as Vinnie Jones and Dennis Wise, Fashanu won his only silverware in 1988 when against all the odds, his Dons side beat Liverpool in the FA Cup Final.

In a 2015 documentary about Wimbledon in the 1980’s, Fashanu was criticised by his former team-mates when he claimed that their dressing room was a violent, cruel place which was dominated by a few individuals.

He ended his career having made over 400 first team appearances, scoring over 150 goals and also won two international caps for England even though he was eligible to play for Nigeria through his father.

Whilst still an active player Fashanu started a new career in television and started working as co-host of TV show ‘Gladiators‘ with Ulrika Jonssen

The show went onto become a huge ratings hit and he has since admitted that during one Wimbledon game he demanded to be taken off at half-time so that he could get to the studio in time.

He has since appeared in a number of celebrity shows including the 2003 series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here where he finished in second place and an ITV documentary called Gone to Pot which saw a group of five celebrities go on a road trip round America looking at marijuana use. He has also hosted the Nigerian version of the hit UK television programme Deal or No Deal and in 2022 he participated in ITV’s hit show ‘Dancing on Ice‘.

In July 2017 the Sun reported that Fashanu had spent two days in a Nigerian jail after he was accused of allegedly working as a broker in a scam to sell plots of land that weren’t for sale.

He still lives in Nigeria where he is a successful businessman and philanthropist having previously worked as the country’s Ambassador for Sport and Tourism and as a board member of the Nigerian FA.
