Jay-Jay Okocha

Where is Jay-Jay Okocha now?

So good that they named him twice, Jay-Jay Okocha retired from playing after winning promotion to the Premier League with Hull City in 2008.

Starting his playing career in 1990 with German side Borussia Neunkirchen, Okocha spent the majority of his club career in Europe and had spells at Paris Saint-Germain, Eintracht Frankfurt and Fenerbahce in addition to his career in the Premier League.

Internationally, Okocha enjoyed huge success with the Nigerian national side winning both the African Cup of Nations in 1994 as well as an Olympic gold medal in 1996.

He also won a number of individual accolades during his playing career including Nigeria’s Player of the Year award on seven occasions and many people within the footballing fraternity acknowledge him as the greatest Nigerian footballer of all time.

Since retiring from playing, Okocha has returned to his native Nigeria and pursued various business interests which included a nightclub called Club 10 which he has since closed.

He also held the role of vice chairman of the Delta State Football Association (DFA) for two years before getting elected as the association’s chairman in March 2015. However, he stepped down at the start of 2019 due to his busy schedule.

In June 2016, he launched the Jay-Jay Okocha Foundation with the primary objective of using football to raise awareness on the strategic importance of education, peace and unity for the economic growth of Nigeria.

Among his many business interests he works as part of the Bundesliga Legends Network which helps to raise awareness of the league in key target markets and is he also an ambassador for BetKing Nigeria.

In recent years Okocha has been appearing in the news for the wrong reasons and faced money laundering charges relating to alleged business frauds in the North-East of England. Fortunately the court case was adjourned and he was ordered to pay bail.

In another incident in 2019 a Lagos high court issued a warrant for Okocha’s arrest after he failed to appear in court over an unpaid income tax bill from 2017.
