James Beattie

Where is James Beattie now?

After playing and scoring goals at the highest level, James Beattie dropped down the leagues and finished his playing career at Accrington Stanley at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Starting his professional career in 1996 at Blackburn Rovers, he went onto make 498 first-team appearances for eight clubs including Southampton where he was the club’s Player of the Year in 1999 and Sheffield United where he won the same award in 2008.

Although he never won any silverware during his career, he was part of the Saints side that lost to Arsenal in the 2003 FA Cup Final, however, he did receive international recognition for his goalscoring exploits and represented England on five occasions in 2003.

Upon retiring from playing Beattie went straight into management at former side Accrington Stanley despite having no previous experience and led them to a respectable mid-table finish before leaving by mutual consent in September 2014.

After a spell out of the game where he worked as a pundit and match analyst, Beattie returned to football coaching in July 2015 when he was appointed as first-team coach at Swansea City, joining up with former Southampton team-mate Garry Monk.

Unfortunately, his stay at Swansea was a brief one as he left after six months when Monk was sacked after a bad run of Premier League results but joined up with him again at Leeds United in 2016 and also for a six-month spell at Middlesbrough in 2017.

He followed Monk for the third team in his career when he was appointed as his first-team coach at Birmingham City in March 2018 where he stayed for two and a half years before moving with him to Sheffield Wednesday where they lasted just three months before getting sacked.

Beattie made a return to football coaching in July 2021 when he joined Wigan Athletic as assistant manager but left in November 2022 when the club appointed Kolo Toure as manager.

He currently works for former side Southampton in an ambassadorial role.
