Where is Iain Dowie now?
Former Premier League striker Iain Dowie retired from playing in 2001 after three years playing at Queens Park Rangers where he was player-manager of their reserves team.
Starting his professional career at Luton Town in 1988 he went onto make over 500 first-team appearances over a 13-year period for six clubs including West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace.
On the international stage he represented the Northern Ireland national side on 59 occasions.
Having already had some coaching experience during his time at QPR he joined Oldham Athletic as assistant manager in 2002 before getting promoted to first-team manager upon the dismissal of Mick Wadsworth.
Although he successfully led his side to the 2002-03 play-offs, the club experienced financial problems and were unable to pay wages on time which led to his resignation.
He wasn’t out of football for long and joined Crystal Palace in December 2003 taking them to the Premier League via the play-offs after a streak of 17 wins from 23 games.
Although they were relegated after one season, Dowie stayed at the club until May 2006 when he joined Charlton Athletic. However this was a short-lived appointment and was sacked after only 15 games after a disastrous run of form.
He then had brief spells at Coventry City, QPR and assisting Alan Shearer at Newcastle United before joining Hull City as football management consultant on a temporary contract.
In March 2016, Dowie joined homebuyer survey company GOTO Surveys as a regional sales manager and spent two years as an associate director before leaving the company in March 2020. He now works as new business director for Lancashire-based firm Alexander Grace Law.
Away from his day job Dowie has done a lot of work in the media as a co-commentator and match analyst for ITV and Sky Sports and occasionally works on their Soccer Saturday programme.
Back to Southampton
Iain Dowie was a guest on Sky Sports programme The Fantasy Football Club in January 2016 where he picked the eleven best players he had ever played with in the #One2Eleven section of the show.
One2Eleven (4-2-3-1 Formation)
GK – Tim Flowers – what a keeper, and my room mate at Southampton.
RB – Tim Breacker – a consummate pro. He could get forward, was a good defender and a great lad around the place.
LB – Julian Dicks – a special player, good lad and a natural winner. He would tell you if you played rubbish, a very straight talking and a proper left-back.
CB – Rio Ferdinand– he was elegant, he looked like a Rolls Royce in terms of his movement and technically he was one of the best central defenders I’d seen.
CB – Chris Coleman – a fantastic character who, without the injury, would have gone on to be a top player. He had everything, pace, a lovely left foot, great around the place and a good leader too.
CM – Gareth Southgate – I played with him at Palace and he was a fantastic lad. He was a good footballer and a lovely athlete, a proper gentleman and also very elegant.
CM – Michael Hughes – I played with him and also managed him. He was small but he was nasty, had a wonderful left foot and could pick a pass or nick a goal.
RAM – Keith Gillespie – a natural winger who had a really good delivery on the run. An outstanding crosser of the ball at pace.
CAM – Frank Lampard – I loved his work ethic. Arguably the best goal-scoring midfielder we’ve ever produced.
LAM – Matt Le Tissier – an amazing player. He was the most naturally talented player I ever played with.
Forward – Alan Shearer – unbelievably aggressive and a winner. He had the ability to hit the ball into the bottom corner more times than I’d ever seen.
