Where is Graeme Murty now?
After over 300 league appearances for Reading including two seasons in the Premier League, Graeme Murty retired from playing in 2010 after a brief spell on the South coast with Southampton.
A former club captain at Reading, he was an important member of the team which won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League with a record 106 points.
During his playing days at Reading, Murty worked in local radio and also local television on a programme called Late Kick Off which he continued after hanging up his boots.
Keen to pursue a career in football coaching, he returned to Southampton in 2012 as an academy coach before leaving in July 2014 to join Norwich City in a similar role.
In August 2016, Murty left Norwich City to join Scottish Premier League giants Rangers as their Head Development Squad Coach before being appointed as Rangers caretaker manager ‘for the foreseeable future’, after Mark Warburton left his post as manager.
He took charge of the side for six games, winning three, drawing one and losing two before new manager Pedro Caixinha arrived. When Caixinha was sacked in October 2017, Murty was once again made caretaker manager and won six of his nine games before the club decided to appoint him as manager until the end of the season.
He was relieved of his duties in May 2018 after two heavy defeats by arch-rivals Celtic the previous month but stayed at the club to work with the under-20’s side.
Murty was promoted in August 2020 to Head of Elite Academy Development but left the club a year later. He made a return to coaching in October 2022 he joined current side Sunderland as manager of their under-21’s side.
