George Boateng

Where is George Boateng now?

A fan’s favourite at each of the four Premier League teams that he played for, George Boateng retired from playing in 2013 after a season in Malaysia with T-Team.

His most successful period during his time in England was arguably with Middlesbrough where he was a member of the successful side of 2003-04 which won the League Cup and also the side which were UEFA Cup runners-up in 2005-06.

Boateng was also a full Dutch international player and represented the under-21’s side on 18 occasions and the senior side four times.

Having made no secret of his desire to go into football management when he retired, Boateng completed his coaching badges in 2012 whilst still an active player and was appointed in his first managerial position at Malaysian side Kelantan FA.

After a trophy-less first season, Boateng was moved into a new role as the Kelantan FA’s senior head coach and technical director but left in March 2015 claiming that the club’s management couldn’t see the bigger picture and that his main desire was to work as a manager or coach.

The Ghanian-born Boateng was back in football in February 2017 when he signed a partnership deal with Ghanaian Premier League team Bechum United to work as a foreign scout for the club.

In September 2018, Boateng made a return to English football when he was appointed as the under-13’s academy coach at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Aston Villa a year later as their assistant under-18’s coach. He was then promoted to head coach of their under-23’s side in September 2020 working alongside former Villa team-mate Mark Delaney.

In February 2022 Boateng was appointed as one of the assistant coaches for the Ghana national side in a dual-role but ended up leaving Aston Villa six months later to concentrate fully on his work with the national team.

Away from the coaching side of the game he has worked as a pundit and co-commentator for channels such as Al Jazeera and Sky Sports News.

#One2Eleven (4-3-3 Formation)

George Boateng was a guest on Sky Sports programme The Fantasy Football Club in September 2016 where he picked the eleven best players he had ever played with in their #One2Eleven section of the show.

George Boateng One2Eleven

GK – Edwin van der Sar – would still be regarded as an outstanding goalkeeper even if he was playing in the modern game as he is so good with his feet. He is also a really nice guy.

RB – Abel Xavier –played with him during my time at Middlesbrough. A great player during his time there and a real character.

LB – Phillip Cocu

CB – Jaap Stam – someone you could always rely on. He trained how he played – hard!

CB – Ronald Koeman – the first name on the team sheet for me. An absolute legend who was a real leader and mentor when I played with him at Feyenoord.

CM – Edgar Davids – ‘The Pitbull’, a player who I looked up to a lot when we played together in the Dutch national team.

LM – Paul Merson – he was amazing during our time at Aston Villa. Was a wonderful crosser of the ball with the outside of his foot. If he didn’t score we usually struggled.

RM – Alen Boksic

ST – Patrick Kluivert

ST – Ruud van Nistelrooy

ST – Mark Viduka – the most laid back person you’ll ever meet but his ability was amazing. At Middlesbrough we changed the whole system just for him!
