Where is Gary Rowett now?
Former Premier League defender Gary Rowett’s playing career came to an early end in 2007 after a persistent knee injury during his time playing for Burton Albion.
Starting his professional career in 1991 with Cambridge United, he went onto make 441 first-team appearances for eight clubs including spells in the Premier League with Everton, Charlton Athletic, Leicester City and Derby County where he won promotion to the top-flight in 1996.
Upon retiring from playing Rowett spent a couple of years out of the game before returning to former side Burton Albion as assistant manager in 2009. When manager Paul Peschosolido was sacked in early 2012, Rowett was put in temporary charge and then given the manager’s job on a full-time basis a couple of months later.
He enjoyed huge success as manager of the Brewers, reaching the League Two play-offs in his first season, a sixth-placed finish in his second season as well as over-seeing the club’s best ever League Cup performance when they reached the third round in 2013.
With his side performing well at the start of the 2014-15 season, and his managerial stock ever-increasing, the ambitious Rowett left Burton to join Championship side Birmingham City in 2014.
After two reasonably successful years with the Blues taking an inexpensively assembled squad to two top-half finishes in the Championship, Rowett was surprisingly sacked in December 2016 after a boardroom reshuffle. His Birmingham side were seventh in the league and three points off third place in the league when he was sacked.
He wasn’t out of football management for long and just three months later he joined Derby County at the start of 2017 leading them to the play-offs the following season where they lost to Fulham in the semi-final. This was the third unsuccessful play-off attempt in five years for the club.
Following this defeat Rowett joined newly-relegated Stoke City in May 2018 who were tipped as one of the pre-season favourites to win promotion. Unfortunately, Stoke had a torrid time on the pitch only winning eight of their 26 league fixtures which ultimately led to his dismissal in January 2019.
He made a return to football management in October 2019 when he joined Championship side Millwall but left the club after four years by mutual consent having achieved top-half league positions in each season under his tenure.
In March 2024, Rowett rejoined Birmingham City in his current role as interim manager until the end of the season following manager Tony Mowbury’s medical leave of absence.
