Upon retiring from playing Gary Rowett had a couple of years out before returning to Burton Albion as assistant manager to Paul Peschosolido in 2009.
When Peschosolido was sacked from the club in early 2012 Rowett was put in temporary charge and given the manager’s job on a full time basis a couple of months later.
Rowett enjoyed huge success as manager, reaching the League Two play offs in his first season, sixth in his second season and he also oversaw Burton’s best ever League Cup performance when they reached the third round.
After two reasonably successful years with Birmingham City where he took an inexpensively assembled squad to two top half finishes in the Championship, Rowett was surprisingly sacked in December 2016 after a boardroom reshuffle.
Rowett’s Birmingham side were seventh in the league and three points off third place in the league when he was sacked.
Gary Rowett was back in football management just three months after he left Birmingham when he joined his former side Derby County.
He replaced Steve McClaren who had been sacked for a second time and joined with the club 10 points off of a Championship play off place.
