Where is Gary Ablett now?
Regarded as a legend at both Merseyside clubs, Gary Ablett retired from playing in 2001 at the age of 36 after a brief spell in the USA playing for the Long Island Rough Riders.
Ablett enjoyed success at both Liverpool and Everton during his playing career and is the only player to have won the FA Cup for both teams.
In total he made over 400 appearances over a 16-year career and in addition to the FA Cup wins he won the First Division title twice and the Charity Shield four times.
Upon retiring from playing, Ablett moved into the coaching side of the game and joined Everton’s academy in 2002 where he spent four years before joining Liverpool as their reserve team manager in 2006.
He enjoyed great success with the Reds winning the Premier League reserves Regional Championship as well as the National Cup, however in 2009, after a reshuffle by then boss Rafa Benitez, Ablett left the club after three years in the role.
Ablett wasn’t out of football for long and just two months later he joined Stockport County as their new first team manager but unfortunately the club was in administration the whole time he was there and his side only managed five wins all season due to his limited resources. He left in 2010.
Ipswich Town was the next port of call for Ablett when he joined their coaching staff on a short term contract however, not long after joining the club, he was taken ill on the training ground and was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of blood cancer.
He bravely fought the cancer for 16 months before passing away in early 2012.
