Where is Garry Monk now?
Swansea City legend Garry Monk who led the club as captain from League Two all the way to the Premier League hung up his boots in 2014 after 10 seasons at the Welsh side.
He was initially appointed as Swansea’s interim player-manager after the sacking of Michael Laudrup, but after surviving a relegation battle he was given the manager’s job on a full-time basis.
Monk’s first full season in charge of Swansea City was a real success with the club finishing in eighth place in the Premier League and beating both Arsenal and Manchester United home and away.
After being touted as a future England national team manager, his Swansea side had a terrible first half of the 2015-16 season and he was cruelly sacked after they went on a terrible run winning just one of 11 Premier League games.
In June 2016, Monk made a return to football as manager of Championship side Leeds United but after a season spent mostly in the play-offs, a run of just one win their last eight games meant that they missed out by five points and he subsequently resigned from his post in May 2017.
He wasn’t out of management for long and joined Championship side Middlesbrough a month later as their new manager but his side took a while to adapt to his way of playing and he was sacked after just seven months with his side three points off of a play-off position.
Again, he wasn’t out of work for long and just three months later he was appointed as manager of struggling Championship side Birmingham City guiding them away from danger with five wins in 11 games to secure a 19th place finish.
After a difficult 2018/19 season with transfer restrictions and a nine point reduction for breach of the league’s Profabillity and Sustanability rules, Monk’s Birmingham side finished the season in 17th place.
Unfortunately after a relationship breakdown with the club’s chief executive over plans for the next season and the sale of one of his best players Jota, he was sacked in June 2019.
Monk made a return to football management just three months later when he joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday however he endured a difficult 2019/20 campaign with his side finishing in 16th place in a season which was interrupted due to the COVID pandemic.
Things didn’t improve for The Owls before the new 2020/21 season and the club were found guilty of breaking the EFL spending rules which incurred a minus 12 points deficit.
Despite reducing the deficit to minus 6 on appeal, Monk’s team didn’t deliver on the pitch losing five of their first 11 league games which ultimately led to his dismissal in November 2020.
Monk made a return to football management in March 2024 in his current role as manager of League One side Cambridge United.
