Where is Gareth Southgate now?
Former Premier League defender Gareth Southgate finished his playing career at Middlesbrough in 2006 when he was appointed manager of the side after Steve McLaren left to take over as coach of the England national side.
A stellar 18-year club career saw him make over 500 appearances, winning the League Cup with two different teams (Aston Villa in 1996 and Middlesbrough in 2004) and reaching the UEFA Cup Final in his last ever appearance with Boro in 2006.
He was also a regular England international making 57 appearances over a 10-year period and was part of the 1996 & 2000 European Championships squads as well as the 1998 FIFA World Cup squad.
In his first managerial post, Southgate had a good first season with Middlesbrough guiding them to 12th position in the Premier League but unfortunately his second season wasn’t as successful and after a promising start the club went 14 games without a win which ultimately resulted in relegation to the Championship.
After making a good start in their new league Southgate was controversially sacked in October 2009 with his side only one point off of the top position.
During his time at Middlesbrough, he also worked as a pundit and co-commentator for ITV, Sky Sports and the BBC before leaving his media duties to take up a post the Football Association as their Head of Elite Development.
In 2013, Southgate made a return to coaching when he was appointed manager of the England under-21’s squad replacing his former international team-mate Stuart Pearce. He had a fantastic start to his reign with his side easing through qualification to the 2015 European Championships only dropping two points.
However with key players missing for the tournament itself, England unfortunately failed to progress beyond the group stage for the third successive finals. His exciting young team did however find success in 2016 when they won the Toulon Tournament without losing a single game. In September 2016, after England manager Sam Allardyce’s resigned following the Daily Telegraph’s third party player ownership scandal, Southgate was appointed caretaker manager of the senior side for the next four games.
After winning two and drawing two of the games he was appointed as full time manager of the England national side on a four-year contract.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Finals were his first tournament as manager of the national side and he led his side to the semi-finals where they unfortunately lost out to Croatia. The team also performed very well in the 2019 UEFA Nations League finishing top of a group which contained Spain and Croatia but lost in the semi-finals to the Netherlands.
On the back of these tournament successes Southgate was rewarded with a new four-year contract which will see him manage the side up to the FIFA 2022 World Cup Finals in Qatar.
Away from the coaching Southgate has authored the We Only Do Positive handbook, a resource for coaches and parents of young players highlighting the importance of positive values and behaviours such as fairness, integrity, inclusion and leadership.
