Edu

Where is Edu now?

Former Arsenal midfielder Edu Gaspar, or just Edu as he was known to fans, retired from playing in 2010 after a brief spell playing in Brazil with Corinthians.

Starting his career with the iconic Brazilian side in 1998, he went onto make 164 first-team appearances over a short 12-year period but won a number of trophies in that time including the Brazilian Serie A title twice and the World Club Cup with Corinthians, the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times with Arsenal as well as the Copa del Rey with Spanish side Valencia.

During his time at Arsenal he was part of the 2004-05 Invincibles squad which went the entire season without losing and he was also a member of the Brazil national which won the Copa America and the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2004-05.

After hanging up his boots, Edu spent a brief period out of the game before returning to former side Corinthians in 2011 as their director of football. He also spent time assisting former Manchester United coach Carlos Quieroz with the Iran national football team in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

In July 2016, he was appointed as technical director of the Brazilian national team where he joined up with former Arsenal player Sylvinho. He continued to work with the national team as their general manager and co-ordinator before moving back to Arsenal in July 2019 when he was appointed as technical director with a remit to co-ordinate the work of the first-team and academy in order to ultimately build an efficient and strengthened squad.

In October 2022 he was appointed in his current role as Arsenal’s first ever Sporting Director.
