Cheick Tiote

Where is Cheick Tiote now?

Cheick Tiote was a no-nonsense defensive midfielder who made over 150 appearances for Newcastle United between 2010 and 2016 who tragically died in 2017.

A fans favourite on Tyneside, his one and only goal for the club was a 25-yard volley equaliser in a 4–4 draw against Arsenal in a game which the Magpies had trailed 4–0 at half time. However, he left the club in 2017 after falling out of favour with manager Rafa Benitez and made a lucrative move to China with Beijing Enterprises.

Tiote represented the Chinese club just 12 times before suffering a cardiac arrest during a team training session and tragically passed away later that day. He was only 30-years-old when he died and left behind two children and his wife who was expecting their third child.

An important player for the Ivory Coast national side having represented them on 55 occasions, Tiote was given a military funeral in his native country and his shirt number of 24 was retired by his former club Beijing Enterprises.
