Where is Andy Townsend now?
After winding down his career with West Bromwich Albion, Andy Townsend was forced into retirement in 2000 due to a recurring knee injury.
Starting his professional playing career in 1985 with Southampton, he went onto make over 700 first-team appearances over a 20-year period for six professional teams including Aston Villa where he won the League Cup in both 1994 and 1996.
On the international stage he was a mainstay of the Republic of Ireland national side in the 1990’s, winning 70 caps and representing them in the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cup finals.
Upon retiring from playing Townsend was offered a coaching job by Gary Megson at West Bromwich Albion but he turned down the offer so that he could pursue a media career.
After more than a decade working for ITV football as a co-commentator on their coverage of the UEFA Champion’s League and the FA Cup, Townsend left the channel in 2015 to pursue other media opportunities.
He now works as a pundit and a co-commentator for other domestic and international channels including BT Sport but has recently returned to ITV for the occasional game.
As well as his punditry, Townsend has also featured as a commentator on a number of EA Sports titles including the FIFA series of games. He also owns a promotions business called Andy Townsend Promotions which encompasses his media work.
In 2020 Townsend worked as an executive producer on the documentary Finding Jack Charlton, a film about his former Republic of Ireland manager’s football career and his later years as a dementia sufferer.
